Abstract:
To create the classroom community and safe space that I am always aiming for, I made sure that my classroom was full of student collaborated work. First, the expectations that are located on the side of the room are student created. Students wrote down what was most meaningful to have in the classroom. With this, not only myself but all students are holding high expectations of their peers. The expectations demonstrate a care about their well-being and also address behavioral issues in the classroom. Not only are students required to follow the expectations, they are also required to respond thoughtfully and respectfully to other students. I have implemented the, "I notice" & "I wonder" sentence starters in a majority of lessons in the classroom. Whenever students respond to their peers or myself, they always have sentence starters ready for their use. This idea works towards positive classroom management and also will assist in participation strategies and structures. Students feel safe presenting their ideas when they know the respect they will receive in return from their peers. I believe this is extremely important for this standard. Routines are necessary for a well-run classroom. Everyday, students begin class by writing in their composition book. I always start class with a journal entry. Whether the journal entry is a off-topic random question, a quote to analyze that will relate to what we're learning about that day, or watching a video, they are all writing and following the routine that promotes a positive learning environment and values the learner.

Artifact One: Classroom Expectations
As a class, student compiled a list of classroom expectations they wanted for our classroom. On the first day of school, students answered the questions, "My classroom needs to be _____ everyday," "English means _____," "For me to succeed, I need Ms. Hughes to _______," and "What do you need from your classmates in order to do your best?" After students answered all of the above questions, I compiled the answers and added them to our classroom expectations board. Having it as a visual in the classroom allows students to always see and remember what is expected of them. |
Artifact Three: Classroom Journals
At the start of each lesson, students are required to answer their journal prompt in their Composition Notebook. At the front of the books, there are expectations and goals that must be filled out. These goals are monitored through out the year as a way to keep students focused on their future self. |
